Joiners and leavers

The joiners and leavers ‘people’ processes are good areas to embed some KM. When people are new to the organisation, still keen and not yet bogged down by today’s work can be a good time to set them up with the understanding that they need to have about KM, and also to get input and involvement from them. What do they need to know about your KM set-up in order to function in the organisation – and how can you embed that information, learning and habit in their induction and on-boarding process? What knowledge are they bringing in with them and how can the organisation benefit? What communities and KM roles could they get involved with? On the other hand, the leavers process can be a good time to make sure we tidy up, preserve and hand over anything KM-wise they may have been involved with: content, projects and roles they may have been playing. In both cases these processes are most likely not seen by the organisation as primarily about KM – which I think can be a good thing if KM doesn’t have to ‘own’ the whole process but can instead leverage whatever is already in place and add some key KM points that you want to hit.
